Have you thought about switching your broadband to Sky? Before choosing any provider it’s important to work out what you need from your broadband and to compare deals from different providers to ensure you get the best one for your needs.

Here’s what to look out for when choosing your broadband service and why Sky might be the broadband provider for you.

What should I consider when comparing broadband deals?

Choosing the right broadband deal isn’t simply about paying less for your service. There are various factors to consider, including:

Installation fee & upfront cost Any installation fee or upfront cost will be stated in the details of a deal, so you can compare those with fees to those that offer free installation of broadband equipment and no upfront costs at all.

Speed The average UK household requires a broadband speed of at least 30Mbps. However, the speeds available to you will depend on where you live and the type of broadband you have.

Length of contract Broadband contracts are typically 12, 18 or 24 months long. While shorter contracts tend to be more expensive, they are particularly useful for students and those who have temporary living arrangements.

Bundles Depending on your provider, you may be able to get a bundle. That’s multiple services, such as home phone, mobile and TV services, in addition to your broadband, for cheaper than if you were to use different providers.

You’ll also want to check if a provider offers a high level of customer service. We’ve analysed the broadband provider market across a number of areas to find the top 10 for you.

What types of broadband are there?

There are three types of broadband:

ADSL Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line broadband is delivered to your property via copper telephone wires.

Cable broadband This broadband provides ‘superfast’ speeds of 30Mbps or more to your property via cable TV networks.

Fibre broadband There are two types of fibre broadband. Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) is delivered to your street cabinet through copper wires and from the cabinet to your home through fibre cables, and provides superfast speeds. Fibre-to-the- property/ home (FTTP/ FTTH) is delivered through optic cable and provides the fastest broadband speeds currently available – of up to around 1Gbps.

What does Sky offer?

Sky operates on one of the largest broadband networks in the UK – Openreach. As multiple providers share the same network, switching from one to the other typically is simpler.

In fact, most of the time switching can be carried out totally remotely, without the need for an engineer. However, customers moving from Virgin Media, for example, may need to allow more time for switching as the company operates its own separate broadband network.

Sky is rolling out its ultrafast broadband across the UK, with it currently available to 15.7% of UK households.

Equally known for its TV offering, customers can choose from an array of bundles including its TV services, its sports channels specifically, Netflix and phone services.

Customers signing up to broadband plan with Sky, will be put on an 18-month contract for either Superfast broadband with an average download speed of 59Mbps, Ultrafast broadband with an average download speed of 145Mbps or Ultrafast Plus with an average download speed of 500Mbps.

Sky Broadband Ultrafast Plus costs new and existing subscribers £45 per month on an 18-month contract. The tariff comes with the UK’s highest speed guarantee, promising subscribers a full month’s refund if their connections fall below 400Mbps.

The deals include phone services, as specified in the plan.

What should I look out for if switching to Sky?

Sky offers a WiFi Guarantee as part of an optional Sky Broadband Boost subscription. It ensures that you will be able to pick up WiFi in all rooms of your home and is free for the first three months of your 18-month contract. From the fourth month onwards, it costs £5 per month.

There is also a £19.95 setup fee for its broadband services. Setup for a bundle of services, including broadband, ranges from £19.95 to £49.

Check the details of your plan to find out what costs will apply to you.
