Google Pixel 6 Specs And Features

Google’s newest addition to its Pixel line features a 6.4” AMOLED display that refreshes at 90Hz. At a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, the Gorilla Glass panel has a pixel density of 411 pixels per inch (PPI).

The handset has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, which means it will withstand being submerged in up to 1.5m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

Both the 128GB and 256GB models come with 8GB of RAM and run on Google’s first proprietary chipset called Tensor. In an Apple-esque move, the search giant has stopped using off-the-shelf chips from Qualcomm and instead developed its own.

It means the ability to optimise its phones’ hardware using a chip designed specifically for it. In practice this means that while some specs don’t look the biggest or best on paper, Google is able to get more out of the hardware through optimisation, including sharper photography, advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and more efficient power usage.

The handset’s main lens is a 50 Megapixel (MP), wide-angle sensor and is accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide lens. The selfie camera is an 8MP wide-angle lens. Tensor’s AI capabilities enable unique features such as the ability to unblur blurred photographs and remove subjects from shots.

The Pixel 6 runs on Android 12, which brings a complete overhaul of the operating system’s look and feel, features an in-display fingerprint scanner and can be charged to 50% in 30 minutes.

Ways to pay for the Google Pixel 6

The Google Pixel 6 (128GB) launched at £599, making it significantly cheaper than the flagship phones from Apple (£779) and Samsung (£669).

If you don’t want to pay the entire £599 upfront, you could take advantage of a 0% purchase credit card and repay the cost of the handset over as many as 23 months. That could make your monthly repayments as low as £26.

You’ll need to make timely repayments of at least the minimum and stay within your credit limit, though, or else you could be charged interest at around 20%. This also applies if you have an outstanding balance beyond the end of the card’s interest-free period.

If you buy the phone outright, you’ll need to sign up for a SIM-only deal to use with it. Giffgaff offers unlimited calls and texts plus 15GB of data for £10 per month on a rolling, one-month contract.

However, if you’d rather not pay upfront or get a separate SIM-only deal, check out the table at the start of this article to see what deals each network is offering on the Google Pixel 6.

Protecting your Google Pixel 6

Breaking or losing a brand new phone can be a headache if you don’t have mobile phone insurance – especially if you have a pay monthly contract you’re obliged to pay even though the handset is broken or gone.

Standalone mobile phone insurance can protect your Google Pixel 6 against accidental damage (including liquid damage), theft and loss for around £5 or £6 per month. If your handset is damaged or lost, these policies will either arrange repair or replacement  once you pay a relatively small excess charge.- typically around £50-£100.

Home insurance and bank account cover

If you have accidental damage and personal possessions cover on your home contents insurance policy, it may offer sufficient protection for your Google Pixel 6. And, at £599, the handset is unlikely to exceed your policy’s single item limit.

However, any claims you make for losing or damaging your phone will forfeit your policy’s no claims bonus, which could make insuring the rest of your belongings more expensive come renewal time.

Some packaged current accounts also offer mobile phone insurance as a benefit, and will protect your handset against accidental damage, loss or theft as long as you register the phone’s IMEI and other details with the bank.

Whatever kind of protection you choose, you’ll still need to be able to show that you took reasonable care to ensure your phone isn’t damaged, lost or stolen. For example, your claim is likely to be rejected if, for example, you left it unattended on a table in a pub, or you used it on a rollercoaster ride.
