Released in 2018, the iPhone XR was one of three updates to the original iPhone X – launching ahead of the iPhone 11. The handset was introduced as a more budget-friendly option for those who still wanted the latest Apple tech.

Following the 2017 release of the iPhone X, Apple came back with three updates to the handset. The iPhone XR offered a lower cost of entry in return for a few design and technology compromises on the more expensive iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max variants.
The XR launched at £749 in the UK back in 2018, but the 128GB model is now available for £549. It runs iOS 12 to 14.5.
iPhone XR screen and battery
The iPhone XR’s 6.1” Liquid Retina IPS LCD display produces images at a resolution of 828 x 1792 pixels, giving it a pixels-per-inch count of 326ppi. It’s scratch and grease resistant to boot.
The handset’s 2942mAh battery promises 16 hours’ video playback and 65 hours’ audio playback. It can be charged wirelessly and reaches 50% charge in half an hour with a 20W charger (sold separately).
iPhone XR camera set-up
On the rear, the XR has a single, wide angle 12 megapixel (MP) camera with an f-number of 1.8 that allows for bokeh-effect portraits. Digital zoom goes up to 5x. At maximum, the camera can record video in 4K at 60 frames per second (fps). Its 7MP front-facing ‘True Depth’ camera has an f-number of 2.2.

There’s a six-core A12 Bionic chip inside the iPhone XR, as well as 3GB of RAM and either 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of storage – but no slots for external memory cards.

The iPhone XR comes in a choice of black, red, yellow, blue, coral or white and has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance – which means it’ll survive in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes.
The handset is NFC-enabled for contactless payments via Apple Pay and can be secured with Face ID, which is Apple’s take on biometric security and allows you to unlock the XR by looking at your screen.
