Released in the UK in 2020, the iPhone SE (Special Edition) is a practical option for iPhone fans. Combining the processing power of the iPhone 11 generation with the less advanced display quality, camera features and aesthetic of the iPhone 8.

iPhone SE processor and screen size

Powered by Apple’s A13 Bionic chip, the iPhone SE promises value for money. The chip, which enables super-fast and smooth functioning of apps and improves the efficiency of its battery, was the company’s fastest processor at the time of release, and is also used in its iPhone 11 flagship range.

The compromise is a 4.7” display that is smaller than newer iPhones. The 1334×750-pixel resolution at 326 ppi doesn’t match up to that of successive models but is still decent.

iPhone SE camera set-up

With multiple rear lens cameras now the norm for high-end smartphones, a return to one unit may not appeal to photography enthusiasts. But the 12MP wide camera is more than sufficient for taking high definition photos, including capturing sweeping landscapes, and recording 4K video at up to 60 frames per second – perfectly adequate for freeze-frame shots in most instances.

Special features include ‘Portrait Lighting’ with six effects, advanced red-eye correction and photo geo-tagging.

iPhone SE battery

The iPhone SE houses a 1821mAh battery, enough power for up to 13 hours of video playback. It can be charged wirelessly or via USB.

Memory, water resistance and more

Inspired by the iPhone 8, the iPhone SE has some of its best aesthetic features, such as its compactness. Smaller than newer iPhone models, it is also conveniently lighter, weighing 148g.

An IP67 rating equates to protection against dust and submersion in one metre-deep water, for up to 30 minutes.

The device comes with 3GB of memory,  37 built-in apps, which give access to some of Apple’s exclusive services such as Apple TV, Wallet and Podcasts, and a dozen accessibility features including Voice Control, Siri and Dictation and Speak Screen.

Heightened security comes in the form of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which is built into the Home button.
