Can I get mobile phone insurance for a second-hand iPhone?
You may be able to get mobile phone insurance on a used and refurbished iPhone, but be aware that some insurers won’t cover an iPhone that’s as little as four-months-old, so check each provider’s terms carefully.
Does mobile phone insurance cover me abroad?
The minimum overseas cover offered by the insurers in our list is 45 days. For the average holidaymaker this is probably fine, but if you’re a seasoned traveller you might need a policy that offers more. There are some insurers in our list that offer year-round overseas protection.
Is mobile phone insurance worth it?
If you don’t like the idea of having to find hundreds of pounds, at short notice, to replace your phone, the right cover is worth paying for, especially if you’re on an ongoing pay monthly contract.
Policies can be had from as little as £5 or £6 per month, which means they’re far cheaper than the cost of replacing your iPhone if something goes wrong.
Some people choose to self-insure, putting money aside to pay for a replacement if necessary – but that takes discipline and could leave you with a shortfall if you end up breaking or losing your iPhone in the short term.
My iPhone is still under warranty - do I need insurance?
Apple’s warranties only cover mechanical failure, which means they won’t protect you against accidental damage, loss or theft, so yes, mobile phone insurance is still worthwhile if your iPhone is under warranty.
Should I get AppleCare+ instead of mobile phone insurance?
AppleCare+ covers you for up to two years from the date of purchase, and includes up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, subject to an excess fee of £25 for screen damage or £79 for anything else.
AppleCare + will cover your device, battery, earphones and other accessories, and you can also benefit from the ‘Express Replacement Service’ which will send out a replacement phone before you return your existing handset.
Prices depend on the iPhone you’re protecting and may work out more expensive than many of the insurers in our list, but you’ll be getting specialist cover from the manufacturer itself.
