How To Protect Your iPhone

iPhones are expensive, in demand and relatively fragile, which means there’s a risk you’ll be landed with a bill for replacing yours if it’s stolen, lost, damaged or broken beyond repair. As such, mobile phone insurance for your iPhone is a good idea as it could cover the cost of replacement should an event like this happen.

We’ve carried out some research to find which insurer offers the best coverage at the best price.

Why We Picked It

SWIPE will charge you £8 a month for accidental damage, theft and loss cover on your iPhone 13 (128GB). Excess ranges from £50 to £150, but falls over time.

For example if you made an accidental damage claim in the first 30 days you’d pay £100 in exceds, but if you made the same claim after 120 days you’d pay only £60.
SWIPE charges £8 a month for an iPhone 13 Pro, £8.15 for an iPhone 13 Pro Max or iPhone 12 Pro Max and £5.75 for an iPhone 13 mini.

A couple of big negatives is that SWIPE won’t cover an iPhone that’s older than four months and only offers 45 days of overseas protection.

This could rule it out as an option for you if you haven’t just bought your iPhone recently or if you travel a lot.

Pros & Cons
  • No limits on claims
  • Instant cover
  • Excess decreases over time
  • Max iPhone age 4 months
  • 45 days’ worldwide cover only

Methodology

Using data from our mobiles partner, Comparison Creator (January 2022), we looked at policies offering accidental damage, loss and theft cover across a range of iPhone models.

We also took into account the excess you need to pay to make a claim, the amount of worldwide cover on offer, the maximum age of iPhone age the insurer will cover, and other common exclusions.

Taking this into account, we then used editorial judgment to award the providers with star rankings based on price and value for money.

What is mobile phone insurance?

Mobile phone insurance pays you cash to repair or replace your phone if it’s broken, lost or stolen. You have to pay a monthly premium for the cover plus an up-front excess fee if you need to make a claim.

The more valuable your phone and the more robust cover you need, the bigger your monthly premium will be.

If your claim is approved, the insurer will either repair or replace your phone.

Why would I need mobile phone insurance?

The newest and highest-spec iPhone costs a whopping £1,549. Having to find that money to replace your phone if it’s broken beyond repair, stolen or lost could be a stretch.

If you pay for your iPhone in monthly instalments via a pay monthly contract, you’d also still be liable for payments – even if the phone is unusable or gone.

A mobile phone insurance policy can give you peace of mind in knowing that you won’t be left footing a big bill if you drop your phone, misplace it or you’re the victim of a crime.

What does mobile phone insurance protect against?

Cover will vary from one insurer to the next, but you can protect your iPhone against the following:

  • Accidental damage (e.g. dropping it and smashing the screen)
  • Liquid damage (e.g. dropping it in water)
  • Theft
  • Loss
  • Mechanical breakdown (e.g. Your phone stops working properly beyond the manufacturer’s warranty)

Not every policy includes all of this cover, but it’s there if you want to pay for it.

What does mobile phone insurance not protect against?

Insurers expect you to take good care of your iPhone and to take reasonable steps to prevent it from being accidentally damaged, lost or stolen.

For example, an insurer may refuse to pay out if you left your iPhone unattended in a pub and it was stolen, or you had it in your pocket when you did a bungee jump and it was smashed.

Rules and exclusions are different with each insurer, so it’s important to check what a policy will and won’t cover you against before buying.

Does my home insurance cover my phone?

Some home contents insurance policies will cover your iPhone, but there are few catches to be aware of.

In order to get the same level of cover offered by those we ranked, your home contents policy would need to include accidental damage and personal possessions cover.

Given the high price of the top-end iPhones, you’d also need a policy with a single item limit of at least £1,500.

And, if you had to make a claim, you’d forfeit your home insurance policy’s no claims bonus, which could make it more expensive when you renew.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get mobile phone insurance for a second-hand iPhone?

You may be able to get mobile phone insurance on a used and refurbished iPhone, but be aware that some insurers won’t cover an iPhone that’s as little as four-months-old, so check each provider’s terms carefully.

Does mobile phone insurance cover me abroad?

The minimum overseas cover offered by the insurers in our list is 45 days. For the average holidaymaker this is probably fine, but if you’re a seasoned traveller you might need a policy that offers more. There are some insurers in our list that offer year-round overseas protection.

Is mobile phone insurance worth it?

If you don’t like the idea of having to find hundreds of pounds, at short notice, to replace your phone, the right cover is worth paying for, especially if you’re on an ongoing pay monthly contract.

Policies can be had from as little as £5 or £6 per month, which means they’re far cheaper than the cost of replacing your iPhone if something goes wrong.

Some people choose to self-insure, putting money aside to pay for a replacement if necessary – but that takes discipline and could leave you with a shortfall if you end up breaking or losing your iPhone in the short term.

My iPhone is still under warranty - do I need insurance?

Apple’s warranties only cover mechanical failure, which means they won’t protect you against accidental damage, loss or theft, so yes, mobile phone insurance is still worthwhile if your iPhone is under warranty.

Should I get AppleCare+ instead of mobile phone insurance?

AppleCare+ covers you for up to two years from the date of purchase, and includes up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, subject to an excess fee of £25 for screen damage or £79 for anything else.

AppleCare + will cover your device, battery, earphones and other accessories, and you can also benefit from the ‘Express Replacement Service’ which will send out a replacement phone before you return your existing handset.

Prices depend on the iPhone you’re protecting and may work out more expensive than many of the insurers in our list, but you’ll be getting specialist cover from the manufacturer itself.
