Charges

To qualify for the introductory interest-free offer on balance transfers, you’ll need to shift the debt within 60 days of opening your account. It will then cost you 2.9% of the amount being transferred each time.

When the 0% window on balance transfers expires, debt remaining on the card will be charged at a representative annual interest rate (APR) of 21.9% (variable). However, depending on your circumstances you could be offered an APR of 24.9% (variable) or 29.9% (variable).

You will get 56 days’ interest-free on purchases regardless, however. This means that if you pay your balance in full and on time each month, you won’t face any interest at all.

Make a payment late, and the penalty fee is £12. Your credit score will also be affected.

Rewards

New cardholders can also get up to five months free of Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Arcade free (paid subscription thereafter).

If you register for Barclaycard Cashback Rewards, you can also earn up to 15% cashback when you spend at a range of participating retailers, while Barclaycard Entertainment provides access to selected live events, festival presales and lots of customer-exclusive perks.

Protection

As with any credit card, Barclaycard’s Platinum card offers protection on purchases costing more than £100 and up to £30,000.

This is available under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Even if you only put part of the cost – such as the deposit – on your card, you are still covered for the entire cost.

Will I be eligible?

You will need a very healthy credit score to be accepted for this card – especially if you have your eye on the headline 0% periods.

If your credit score doesn’t stand up to this level of scrutiny, you could be offered much shorter promotional periods. The APR you are offered may also be higher than the representative 21.9% (variable).

The balance transfer is fixed, however, at 2.9%, regardless of the rates and 0% terms you are offered.

Applying through the eligibility checker tool will show you your likelihood of getting accepted – and on what terms – without harming your credit score.

What are the pros?

  • Generous 0% introductory period on both purchases and balance transfers
  • No annual fee
  • Up to 5  months of Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Arcade for free
  • Rewards including cashback and access to selected live events if register with Barclaycard Cashback Rewards

What are the cons?

  • May be offered shorter 0% windows and higher APR
  • Much longer 0% windows available on balance transfers
  • Foreign transaction fees apply for use abroad

What more should I know?

This offer is only available to customers new to Barclaycard customers.

Once accepted, you’ll need to stay within your credit limit and pay at least the minimum amount on time every month. Fail to do this and the promotional rate is likely to be withdrawn, while your credit score could take a hit too.

You’ll need to be disciplined in clearing your balance by the time the 0% introductory deal ends, or costs will shoot up.

When making balance transfers (a maximum of five are permitted at a minimum £250 each) they should not exceed 90% of your allocated credit limit. You cannot make a transfer from any other Barclaycard.

If you withdraw cash from an ATM using your card, you will be charged interest right away.

Is the card right for me?

If you have a good credit score, with existing credit card debt and are in search of a solid all-rounder credit card deal, then this card could be top of the list.

Notwithstanding the promotional periods, this card comes with other perks, including five months free of Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Arcade, as well as access to selected live events.

What are my alternatives?

If your primary objective in applying for this card is to transfer more expensive existing card debt over to it, there are much longer 0% deals up for grabs to suit the purpose.

However, if you are looking for an ‘all rounder’ card that offers interest-free spending too, Barclaycard’s Platinum card could be an ideal solution.
